How Many Live Counters Does Your Wedding Actually Need?

Live counters are the single biggest swing factor in most wedding catering quotes β€” and also the easiest place to overspend on something guests barely notice. Here's how to pick the right number.

The short answer

Two well-staffed live counters is the right number for most weddings up to 400 guests. Each additional counter adds β‚Ή70–₹220 per guest to your bill β€” and past two, extra counters tend to create queues rather than add enjoyment.

What each live counter actually costs

Live counters are priced per guest, on top of your base menu β€” because each one needs its own chef, equipment and fuel, separate from the main kitchen line.

Why more counters isn't more generous

The instinct is to treat counter count as a proxy for how impressive the event feels. In practice, it works the opposite way past a certain point.

Two well-staffed counters beat five understaffed ones every time. Five counters at a 300-guest wedding creates queues at all of them β€” and guests remember waiting far more vividly than they remember variety.

Each counter can realistically serve a limited number of guests per hour before a queue forms. Spreading your live-counter budget across two properly staffed stations β€” rather than five thinly-staffed ones β€” almost always produces a better guest experience for the same or lower spend.

A simple way to choose your two

If you're only adding two counters, pick one savoury and one that's different in character β€” not two variations of the same thing.

  • β€’ Chaat + Tandoor β€” the most-requested Delhi NCR pairing; familiar and works for almost any guest mix.
  • β€’ Chaat + Mocktail bar β€” good for daytime functions (roka, engagement) or when you want something lighter than fried snacks.
  • β€’ Tandoor + Dessert bar β€” a heartier savoury counter balanced by a sweet finish, works well for evening receptions.

For events past 400 guests, a third counter starts to make sense β€” but consider whether it's better spent adding a second station of the same counter type (a second chaat counter, for instance) rather than a fourth different cuisine, since duplicate stations reduce queueing more reliably than variety does.

Frequently asked questions

How many live counters should I have at a 300-guest wedding?+

Two, well-staffed, is the sweet spot for most 200–400 guest weddings β€” a chaat counter and one more depending on your menu (tandoor for a heartier feel, mocktail for a lighter one). A third only makes sense past roughly 400 guests, where a single pair of counters would otherwise create long queues.

Do live counters replace the main buffet?+

No β€” live counters supplement the main sit-down or buffet menu, they don't replace it. They're an experience add-on (food cooked or finished in front of guests) layered on top of your starters, mains, dal, rice and breads.

Why do live counters cost so much more than a listed dish?+

Each counter needs its own dedicated chef, its own equipment (tawa, kadhai, tandoor or fryer), its own fuel supply, and its own ingredient prep separate from the main kitchen line. You're paying for a small standalone cooking station, not just a dish.

Which live counter is most popular at Delhi NCR weddings?+

Chaat counters (golgappa, tikki, papdi) are consistently the most requested β€” they're familiar, fast to serve, and work for almost any guest mix. Tandoor/kebab counters are the next most common, especially for evening functions.

Can I add a live counter after I've already booked my catering?+

Usually yes, if you give your caterer enough notice β€” a counter needs its own staffing and equipment to be arranged, so late additions (inside the final week) may not always be possible or may cost more. Confirm your final counter list at least 2 weeks before the event.
